Make a plan

Grab a sheet of paper. At the top of the paper, write 5 years and a million dollars. Here, I detail the many reasons you need a 5 year plan. Now how do we do that? If you charged $100 a head and spent 4 hours on each head, 8 hours a day. It would take you roughly 14 years to do it. Right? So that can’t be the plan. Also, no one wants to work that hard for that long. Especially since being alive (rent, bills, transportation) is going to eat up at least half that. So what’s the plan?

What’s the approach

We want $1,000,000. So what do we do? We’ve got to figure out all the ways to capitalize that skill. Yes braiding hair will be our beginning approach. But what’s next? Take some notes on all the different ways to use hair braiding to make a million dollars. Then let’s calculate what we would have to do in each area to make a million dollars in 5 years for every area.

That’s crazy. All those numbers sound ridiculous. And they are. Everything there is what you would have to do to make a million dollars for each venture. But you don’t have the time to make the amount of videos or braid that many heads. You’ve got 5 years. So we prioritze the least amount of input for the maximum amount of output and work towards that goal. Let’s divide that million among the different ways we are going to use to get it. There are 6 ways, but we are going to say 5 for the sake of easy math.

5 years from now

1,000,000 Divided among:

$200,000 from hair braiding. At $100 a head and 2 heads a day 5 days a week for 5 years is more than $200,000

$200,000 from Look Book Sales at $150 a book. Sell 26 books a week (That’s assuming you have already collected enough pictures to make a decent look book).  26 seems like a lot until you think about how many hair stylists have look books sitting in their shops in your state alone. And then there is amazon and shopify.

$200,000  from Video courses on hair care and hair braiding $250 a piece Sell 4 courses a week

Affiliate Marketing for hair care and related products Commission of $5 a unit at 160 units a week 

Youtube channel on haircare with 50,000,000 views. Thats 200,000 views a week. Which seems like a lot, but not if you have made videos every day or every other day and each video is getting 10,000 views or more.

Google adsense for website 200,000 page views a month. That’s 50,000 views a week. That’s a lot. But you can stack adsense with media.net. And work hard to rank higher on google, which will increase your income. 

Is there a market for hair braiding?

Actually, there is a big market for this. Meaning you can braid your way to 1000000. You have African hair braiding, on one side of the coin, which is a style of hair braiding that is helpful for managing curly hair.

But there are also a lot of other styles of braids too. There are corn-rows, box braids, feed-in braids, Fulani braids, etc. Many of these styles are popular with women of African American descent, as they are traditionally used by African women and men in extremely curly hair. But braids are catching on now. They have always been a hidden hair style, popular in some areas, and ebbing and flowing with the various tides of fashion as they come and go.

But with the level of commitment it would take to learn how to do it very well. I also feel that this side hustle would be better reserved for those who have a passion for braiding. When you don’t love it, you might probably get frustrated and quit due to the sheer, intense amount of practice it will require to become good at it.

• What are their interests?
• How much do they make?
• What books do they read?
• How old are they?
• Where do they live?

Using this information, you will be able to find out what your clients need by going to the places they go too.

Set up a website (Here’s why)and include online booking within a 20 mile radius. Put Google Adsense on website. Also put up a section for reviews

Buy camera if you don’t have one or get permission to borrow one. Take Pictures of every head that you do (High quality photographs from different angles).

Ask for reviews from every customer.

Create a youtube channel and make a video as often as you can at least once or twice a week.  Put google adsense on the video and link your video to yourwebsite.

Blog about hair care mistakes, adventures, and events, as often as you can but at least once a week.

Sign up for an affiliate program like amazon associates. But find out if Sally’s beauty supply has an affiliate program. Even Target has an affiliate program these days. Advertise the products on your site with a an affiliate link that gives you a commission if they click and purchase from there. 

Start taking notes and practicing and planning for your video course. Make it thorough, and worth every penny you charge. Hell, make it worth more than what you charge. 

Once you get your site set up, create an email under your domain name and start inviting everyone to go to your website to sign up and send weekly newsletters. That way you build up a relationship with them and keep yourself relevant for the day that you ask them to buy from you.
